Summer’s almost upon us and to SHFT that means one thing: hitting the road and of course, discovering incredibly delicious food as we go. To make the journey a little bit easier, we have Food Tripping — an app we created with Ford Motor Company specifically to help locate local, healthful, artisanal, sustainably-minded spots wherever you are on the road. Each week, we will be featuring another city and a handful of the incredible food gems we discover along the way.
We start in none other than Austin, Texas, where with the help of our Food Tripping app, we'll guide you to some of the best local food in the heart of Texas.
Austin is a city that is really good at making you question whether you’re actually in Texas, but our first stop may make you question whether you're still in the US. Blue Dahlia is a charming little café in the center of Austin. With a patio and charming décor, you’ll feel more like you’re in the European countryside. They incorporate fresh, local ingredients with an elegant touch, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Go for brunch and sip on a mimosa under the lush vines. Don’t hesitate - everything on their menu is good, so you can't go wrong.
On the outskirts of town, there’s not much you won’t fall in love with at Springdale Farm, where SHFT has hosted some memorable meals. It’s a little slice of idyllic countryside heaven, complete with chickens, beautiful fields of fresh produce, and live music and outdoor farm dinners. Go visit their farmer’s market stand on Wednesday or Saturday and take a stroll around the farm. The owners Paula and Glenn are there to give you farming tips, know-how, and inspiration. While you are there, check out Eden East, where you can make reservations to eat a true farm to table dinner under pecan trees adorned with crystals and twinkly lights. After an afternoon at Springdale, though, you may never want to leave the farm.
After a day of walking around downtown Austin, use Food Tripping to navigate to La Condesa, a personal favorite of SHFT co-founder Adrian Grenier. Their Margarita la Condesa deserves a mention for the cactus salt rim alone. Other standouts are their elote, their decadent carnitas, and guacamole with chipotle and roasted nuts. Take a seat at the bar, order a few tacos and make new friends while you indulge in this fresh — and delicious — take on classic Mexican cuisine.
