Martin Roemers: Metropolis

In 2008, more people were living in cities than in rural areas for the first time in history. And if anything, the global urbanization trend is accelerating. In twenty years, it’s expected that nearly 60 percent of the world’s population will be city dwellers. One of the world’s fastest growing cities is Mumbai, India, where Dutch photographer Martin Roemers traveled to capture this colorful series of photos.

The collection, aptly titled “Metropolis,” captures Mumbai’s bustling street life in long-exposure shots that speak to the energy of the city. The photos are muddled and chaotic yet there is a certain harmony within them. Such is the relationship between humans and urban spaces. “Even with their bustle and chaos,” Roemers says, “megacities retain their human aspects.”
