    • Two bipartisan senators have proposed a sensible idea that most people are going to hate. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) wrote to President Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform calling for a 25-cent per gallon hike in the federal gas tax.     • Philly artist Alex Queral has found a creative application for those useless, wasteful anachronisms known as phone books. Using an X-ACTO knife and acrylic ink, Queral makes painstakingly detailed, sculptural portraits of cultural icons out of the pages. (via Flavorwire)

    • Royal Dutch Shell is pushing forward on its plans to drill for oil off Alaska's northern coast. Echoing most of our sentiments, Pew Environment Group warns that the oil giant isn't prepared for a potential spill in the Arctic, where the risks and unknowns are far greater than in the Gulf.
