Having grown up in the age of the automobile, North American cities aren't generally the most bikeable places in the world. In a recent international ranking of the world’s best cities for biking, only one North American city (Montreal) made it to the top 20. Of course, that doesn't mean there are no good places to bike in the U.S. and Canada. There are, and the scene is getting better all of the time.
Bike Score, the Seattle biking map startup (and the same folks behind Walk Score) released a new, expanded ranking of bikeability in U.S. cities. It used four criteria to determine the rankings: availability of biking infrastructure, hilliness, route options and the level of commuting.
It awards scores out of 100, with 90–100 deemed a "biker’s paradise," 70-89 "very bikeable," 50-89 "bikeable," and 0-49 "somewhat bikeable".
For cities with a population of over 500,000, Portland took first place with a score of (70.3), followed by San Francisco (70), Denver (69.5), Philadelphia (68.4), and Boston (67.8).
