The spark that started SHFT was a simple act of sharing between friends. Adrian and I would email each other an article on a new sustainable product, a great video or an interesting post. We would get inspired and excited by these digital gifts. Adrian sent me a link to OVERVIEW last week and it reminded me of those early emails. We hope you find it as awesome and humbling as we do.
A few weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space. Planetary Collective produced a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect. This was first described by author Frank White in 1987 as an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
OVERVIEW is the perfect first week of the year WATCH. It reminds us of the early days, pre-SHFT, when we’d exchange emails that literally elicited goose bumps. Happy New Year.
