Drawn by a desire to experience and chronicle one of the world’s last frontiers, photographer Rob Huff spent a good chunk of five years traveling Alaska’s Dalton Highway, a 414-mile stretch of (mostly dirt) road along the Trans-Alaskan pipeline. The highway, known locally as the Haul Road, is the northernmost road in the Americas. It owes its existence entirely to the need for a transportation route to and from the massive Prudhoe Bay oil field on Alaska’s North Slope.
In The Last Road North, we experience this extreme landscape through the windshield of Huff’s car. The narrowly framed images are oddly claustrophobic, speaking to the isolation and loneliness of the Far North–and raising questions about our relentless search for oil in the furthest reaches of the planet.
