What to do with public eyesores in the inner city? It should come as no surprise that the Dutch have dreamed up a novel way of beautifying them. Designer Roeland Otten, best known for the amazing ABChairs he released in 2010, uses the power of camouflage to disguise ugly public buildings in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
If you’re picturing drab green military canvas draped over buildings, think again. Otten instead uses photographic prints, mosaic tiles and paint to cloak architectural eyesores. The project began in 2009 when he covered a large electricity substation in Rotterdam with high-resolution photographs of the surrounding streets, creating a mirror effect that made the large structure invisible. For his latest project, Otten blanketed a small public health building in Amsterdam with little mosaic tiles, creating a pixelated view of the surrounding area.
