Manmade Land: Photos by Siebe Swart

As global temperatures continue their upward trajectory, rising seas are an imminent threat for low-lying countries like Holland. The famously waterlogged nation is at the vanguard of innovation in water management, employing groundbreaking tactics to protect human settlements and maintain coastal land.

In Manmade Land, Dutch photographer Siebe Swart shows his country’s struggles with rising water from an aerial perspective. Shot from a helicopter of the course of several years, the images show the damage done by past floods, the ever present danger of the water today and how dikes, overflow channels and weirs protect the fragile country.
