Mercedes-Benz announced that its SLS AMG supercar will now be made in an “E-Cell” version that will go into production in 2013. This electric road beast will contain a 48 kWh lithium-ion battery that will power four electric motors, achieving a combined output of 392 kW and 880 Nm (or 526 bhp and 649 lb-ft of torque!). That will make it one of the fastest cars on the road, and it will do it with zero emissions. Not bad for those who want to have their cake and eat it too. That is, if you can afford one.
Seriously though, Mercedes has been doing a most excellent job of leading the green car revolution. It just released the B-Class F-Cell hydrogen electric car that has a 250 mile range and can be leased for $800 a month.
Granted it will remain an expensive automobile. But it’s great to see that they understand the need for greener technology and hopefully their example will trickle down to more affordable models for the masses.
