It’s always amazing when an artist can portray something banal in a fascinating new light. Claire Droppert does just that with these captivating images of sand thrown through the air. For the series, called Sand Creatures, the Rotterdam-based photographer captured chunks of sand suspended in mid-air, snapping super detailed photos in which the sand piles appear almost as clouds. The images are the first part of a new project investigating the idea of weightlessness.
“I once saw my daughter kicking sand up in the air on the beach. And in the sunlight, it looked gorgeous,” Droppert said. “In this Gravity project I want to capture earths different elements and let them stand out in their natural surroundings using moments of zero gravity. ‘Sand Creatures’ is the first in line.”
