The keen eyes at Ignant have hipped us to this interesting project from artist duo Bruce Gilchrist and Jo Joelson, together known as London Fieldworks. The project, called Spontaneous City in the Tree of Heaven, is a series of interventions in London’s green spaces, involving the mounting of bespoke bird boxes on trees of heaven (Ailanthus altissima). The artworks, which act as homes for birds and insects, reflect the architecture of the areas where they are situated. They speak not only to crumbling wildlife biodiversity but also human overpopulation and the rise of megacities.
From the artists:
The Spontaneous Cities are temporary interventions in the trees reflecting the local architecture, a metaphorical interplay between the condition of the animal and the human. As well as being open to occupation by urban birds and insects, Spontaneous City can also be read as an allegory of population crash and dwindling biodiversity.
