Aerial Farm Photos by Edward Burtynsky

In June 2010, Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky headed to the remote and dry Monegros region of northeastern Spain, where he hired a helicopter pilot and took to the sky to shoot pictures of the topography below. The results, featured in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, are stunning images of farmland patterns that could easily pass as abstract art.

“You can still see a little bit of the earth and the color of the dried crop,” said the photographer. “I think the combination of those two things really created the kind of color palette that I like.”
