Caroline Mackintosh: Metallurgy

In Metallurgy, South African photographer Caroline Mackintosh positions mirrors in natural landscapes around Cape Town, creating warped new perspectives of the physical environment. The reflective landscape works are part of a widely diverse and impressive portfolio that includes fashion, nude, portrait and Polaroid photography. The mirrors in the images act as “portals” that emphasize the remote otherness of the surrounding landscape. The artist explains: “The idea was to highlight the loneliness of the landscapes by establishing the mirror-portals as separate, almost sentient, entities and placing them to hover in isolation, as though forever experiencing an alternate perspective.”
