Doug Aitken: Altered Earth

Fresh off his amazing video installation projected on the facade of the Hirshhorn Museum, L.A. artist Doug Aitken is installing a new exhibition at a 19th-century train station in Arles, France. The show, entitled Altered Earth, explores the ever-evolving geography and ecosystem of the Camargue region in France.

“It’s so remote, a natural place that does not seem to change,” Aitken told NOWNESS. “But then you start to notice that everything is in flux.”

Incorporating film, literature, data visualizations and sound design, the work invites the user to piece together fragments of the landscape to create their own fictional narrative of the Camargue. The site-specific work has been developed into an application for the iPad by Meri Media.

The films themselves, of which there are seven, are devoid of narrative or plot, showing Carmague’s salt pans, wild horses, and decaying architecture.  The LUMA Foundation, which commissioned the work, calls it “a work of land art for the electronic era.”
