The DeLorean DMC-12, the iconic sportscar made famous in the time-traveling eighties flick Back To The Future, is set to return to American roads in 2013. It will retain its retro-futuristic look, says Humble, Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company, but the internal combustion engine will be replaced by a lithium battery setup designed by FLUX Power.
The DMC-12 EV, which will retail for around $100,000, will go about 100 miles on a charge, with the electric equivalent of 250 horsepower taking the vehicle up to speeds in the 90s. In an EV market dominated decidedly unsporty, underpowered vehicles, the electric DeLorean is a welcome shift from the norm, representing a chance to bring the dormant company back to the future.
