Carly Paradis "The Hope of a Favorable Outcome"

It may be the digital age, but we’re seeing more and more contemporary filmmakers digging in the vaults to explore age-old animation techniques like the phenakistoscope and the zoetrope. The former, which involves a spinning disc attached vertically to a handle, was tapped by directing duo The Brothers Lynch in this music video for the Carly Paradis track “The Hope Of A Favourable Outcome.” The brothers dug up a number of animations from Victorian-era phenakistoscope discs, then blended them together in this hypnotic animation.

“When we saw the phenakistoscopes we immediately thought there was something so mesmerising about them and quickly settled on an infinite zoom approach to the video,” said Keith, one half of the Lynch pair. “We’d long been massive fans of the video for “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and how hypnotic the infinite zoom was and it’s a technique we’d been interested in using on a project and it just felt right for this one.”
